Violence is a Precursor

violence is a precursor
violence begets more
it is time to erase the past
and begin to settle the score

let it go
it’s not allowed
bring in the light
release this cloud

never in our history
has violence been so bold
pull into our hearts, feel with our hearts
release the memories, discard the old

there can no longer be justification
for a “because” blames another
release the past, there can be no caste
see ourselves mirrored in each other

the brave and most qualified leaders
are those who have suffered the most
ready to begin again, forgiving the past
then welcoming neighbours as a caring host
